The Arabian Gulf University, in collaboration with the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT), has commenced pearl oyster processing for laboratory analysis, alongside sediment core analyses from associated habitats, as part of a national project on blue carbon in oyster beds and seagrass ecosystems in Bahrain’s waters. This step aims to collect first-of-its-kind baseline data on carbon stocks in coastal and marine ecosystems, highlighting the carbon value of these habitats and estimates of their blue carbon storage, while supporting ecosystem protection and contributing to Bahrain’s climate commitments.
